Gait analysis / pedography

See where too much load lands when walking.

Did you know?

With every step, a multiple of body weight passes through each foot. If this load is distributed unevenly, zones of overload arise. The consequences often appear not in the foot, but further up: in the knee, hip or back. When standing, this often goes unnoticed. Only measurement while walking shows what is actually happening.

How the measurement proceeds

You walk barefoot across a measuring plate set into the floor. Thousands of sensors record how pressure under your feet is distributed as the foot rolls through the step. The result appears as a colour image on the monitor: red areas indicate high load, blue areas low load.

We measure while you are standing and while you are walking. The measurement is painless, takes only a few minutes and uses no radiation.

What can be read from this:

  • How your weight is distributed across both feet
  • Where peak pressures arise during roll-off
  • Whether the arch of the foot and the roll-off are working normally
  • Signs of flat foot, splay foot, pronated foot or high-arched foot
  • Whether an existing insole actually relieves the load
  • Zones of overload that can lead to pressure points

Particularly suitable for:

  • Foot, heel or forefoot pain
  • Recurrent knee, hip or back complaints without a clear cause
  • Suspected foot malalignment
  • Before orthopaedic insoles are made
  • To check whether an existing treatment is working
  • In diabetes with altered sensation in the feet, for early detection of pressure points
  • In running sports and with recurring complaints in the shin or foot

How we proceed:

The measurement alone does not yet explain anything. It shows where too much load arrives – why that is so becomes clear only in connection with the physical examination of the feet, the leg axes, mobility and muscle strength. We assess both together.

From this we derive the treatment: targeted exercises, physiotherapy, a supply of insoles, advice on footwear or, if necessary, further diagnostics. After a fitting we measure again on request, to check whether the load has actually changed.

Important: immediately after an operation, or in the case of acute inflammation when the foot must not bear weight, we postpone the measurement.
