Histamine intolerance
Histamine is a natural messenger substance that occurs in many foods and is also produced by the body itself.
Puzzling symptoms after eating? Cheese, wine, headache – it could be histamine.
In histamine intolerance, breakdown can be impaired – symptoms occur that resemble an allergy, but are not a classic allergy.
Typical symptoms:
- Skin redness, itching, wheals
- Headaches, migraine
- Gastrointestinal complaints (bloating, diarrhoea, nausea)
- Racing heart, dizziness
- Runny nose, blocked nose
- Menstrual cycle irregularities in women
The symptoms often occur shortly after eating foods rich in histamine.
Diagnosis & assessment:
Medical history & food diary
Exclusion of other causes (e.g. allergies, gastrointestinal diseases)
Elimination diet followed by a challenge under medical supervision
Blood or stool tests are often not reliable – the diagnosis is made clinically!
What helps? – Treatment and everyday tips:
- Low-histamine diet — individually adapted
- Prefer fresh, home-prepared meals
- Avoid alcohol and highly processed products
- In consultation with the physician: taking DAO enzyme preparations before meals
- Reduce stress – stress can also promote histamine reactions
